Here’s a thought the next time you pop the top on a bottle of Grolsch…

The Grolsch brewery in Enschede, the Netherlands, which produces Grolsch Premium Pilsner, has – as of 1 January 2020 - moved to using entirely green electricity generated by European windmills.

It’s an amazing milestone, which has seen its CO2 footprint halve.

CO2 emissions have reduced by 46% or 6,700 tons per year. This is equivalent to the annual emissions of 3,000 households.

There’s still more to do though of course and Grolsch’s aim is have a completely CO2-neutral brewery by 2025, that uses only sustainably-generated energy.

Susan Ladrak, Manager Engineering at the brewery said: “Based on our ambition to have a completely CO2-neutral brewery by 2025, I am incredibly proud that we can now take a big step forward by switching to 100% green electricity. This means we are reducing CO2 emissions by 6,700 tons of CO2 per year. At the same time, we are making great progress on the next steps, including replacing natural gas with more sustainable alternatives. This involves working closely with various partners in the region. We feel it is our responsibility to contribute to a better, greener and more circular world.”

Radegast Raises Awareness of Water Scarcity in Nature with Beer Brewed from Humidity in the Air

Radegast (part of Plzeňský Prazdroj, an Asahi Europe & International subsidiary) was the first brewery in Central Europe to brew beer from water extracted from humidity in the air. The water was collected and treated thanks to a unique device developed by scientists from the Czech Technical University in Prague. The intention of this special project is to draw attention to the loss of water in nature, further the dialog, ambition and action for water conservation. The Radegast brewery has long been among the breweries with the lowest specific water consumption in the world and we are constantly looking for other ways to save this vital resource and return it to nature.
